Senior Lecturer in Technical GIS

Research and education at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (MGeo) addresses fundamental and applied questions on the Earth's past, present and future climate and environment, including people's interactions with the natural world and consequences for human wellbeing. MGeo advances and deploys cutting-edge methods, models and technologies in environmental science, quaternary sciences, bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, Geographic Information Science (GIS), and computational science for health and environment, to study processes spanning from the microscopic to the planetary, across all time scales.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the department's core activities in research, teaching and collaboration, as well as, where appropriate, academic leadership roles.

• The post involves research in geographic information science, with an emphasis on the technical aspects of GIS. The successful candidate is expected to actively seek and secure external research funding, publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and contribute to the development of the department's research environment, including interdisciplinary collaborations.
• The duties also include teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in geographic information science (GIS), with a particular focus on technically oriented courses such as geographic databases, Web GIS, GIS algorithms and data structures, geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), and the collection and analysis of 3D geodata. The position includes course coordination, course development and participation in pedagogical development within the subject area.
• Within the framework of outreach, the successful candidate is expected to engage with the wider community, including public authorities, industry and other societal stakeholders, and to contribute to the application of GIS and geospatial technologies in relevant societal areas.
• The duties may also include participation in departmental and faculty-wide administrative and management-related tasks, such as committee work, programme development and coordination assignments.

The allocation of time between research, teaching, outreach and administrative duties follows the faculty's working hours model, under which teaching normally accounts for approximately 25–35% of a full-time position, with the remaining time divided between research, outreach and other duties. The content, distribution and scope of the duties may change over time in line with the development of the organisation, strategic priorities and external conditions.

To support the establishment of a research group, resources equivalent to a PhD student position will be attached to the post.

A person is qualified to be employed as a senior lecturer if they have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD in subject matter of relevance to the position, or equivalent research expertise, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4 Section 4.

For this position, applicants must hold a PhD in Geographic Information Systems, Geographic Information Science, Geoinformatics, Engineering Surveying, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related or equivalent subject area.

The position requires at least five weeks' training in teaching and learning in higher education or corresponding knowledge that has been obtained in some other way. An exception to this requirement may be made in special cases. Applicants who do not possess training in teaching and learning in higher education are to undergo such training within two years of taking up the position.

Teaching staff at Lund University are required to be suitable for the position and to have the general ability to fulfil their work duties well.

The requirements for the position are:

• The applicant must demonstrate a strong academic background in the technical aspects of geographic information science (GIS). Academic competence must be evidenced by publications in reputable, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
• The applicant must demonstrate a proven ability to successfully secure external research funding in a competitive environment, as well as experience of leading their own research projects.
• The applicant must demonstrate documented experience of teaching at advanced level in GIS, particularly in areas such as geographic databases, web GIS, GIS algorithms and data structures, geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), and the collection and analysis of 3D geodata.
• The applicant must have experience of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• The applicant must demonstrate experience of supervising undergraduates and PhD students.
• The applicant must demonstrate a strong ability to engage with the wider community, including experience of applying GIS and geospatial technologies in areas such as the environment and climate, urban planning, health and epidemiology, and disaster management, preferably in collaboration with public sector bodies, industry or other societal stakeholders.
• The applicant must have a very good command of spoken and written English.
• The applicant must have experience of research and/or teaching outside Lund University.
• The applicant must have very good collaborative skills and well-developed communication skills.

Merits for the position are:

The applicant must have the ability to interact effectively with research, teaching and administrative staff, both internally and externally, including stakeholders in academia, industry and the public sector.

As much attention will be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. When appointing teaching staff, Lund University's Appointment Rules apply, in addition to the provisions set out in the Higher Education Ordinance.

For a non-Swedish speaking staff members, language level B2* must be achieved in Swedish within three years.
