Karolinska Institutet, The Institute of Environmental Medicine – with focus on education and research
Join us in developing education of the highest quality
The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) conducts research in toxicology, occupational and environmental medicine, epidemiology, and physiology, with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect human health. IMM educates students, doctoral students and professionals in areas including toxicology, work and health, epidemiology, and biostatistics, and is responsible for the Master's Programme in Toxicology and the Master's Programme in Work and Health at Karolinska Institutet.
IMM is a national expert body in environmental medicine. Researchers at IMM serve as scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers and participate in national and international expert groups.
Toxicology is a field that investigates the mechanisms and toxic effects of chemical substances with the aim of identifying risks to humans and contributing to sustainable development. Toxicological health risk assessment deals with the scientific methodology used to evaluate the risks to humans from exposure to chemical substances, such as those found in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, pesticides, and environmental contaminants in food, water, and air.
Toxicological health risk assessment involves the use and evaluation of various types of data from toxicological studies in animals, animal-free cell-based and computational models, as well as human studies. These data are analyzed with regard to factors such as relevance, reliability, dose-response relationships, and other considerations, and are then integrated to establish health-based guidance values and assess health risks.
Today, there is a growing shift away from toxicological studies in animals, with novel methodologies for toxicological health risk assessment being developed instead that use mechanistic data from cell-based and computational models. These are integrated through so-called Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) that describe the relationship between mechanistic data and toxic effects. These new methods, known as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), form a fundamental component of next-generation toxicology.
You will be the course responsible teacher and examiner for the course Next-generation Toxicology within the Master's Programme in Toxicology, teach in the course and in other courses within the programme, and carry out pedagogical development work in courses within the programme. You will also be the course responsible teacher and examiner for doctoral courses and executive and professional education in toxicological health risk assessment.
You will independently conduct and lead research in toxicology, primarily within novel methodologies for toxicological health risk assessment that utilise, for example, New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), which form a fundamental component of next-generation toxicology.
You will participate to IMM's mission as national expert body in environmental medicine accoding to Ordinance (1994:1244) on the Institute of Environmental Medicine, specifically within toxicological health risk assessment, by among other things providing authorities with scientifically substantiated evidence.
