Established in 2010, the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N) is a pan-university research institute that focuses on systems-level research for tropical megacities. It performs translational research that covers the energy value chain from generation to innovative end-use solutions, motivated by industrialisation and deployment. ERI@N has multiple Interdisciplinary Research Programmes which focus on translational Research, Development & Deployment which focus on specific area of the energy value chain, and a number of Living labs and Testbeds which facilitate large scale technology deployment enabling validation and demonstration of real-world applications.

We are looking for an Engineer to lead the scale-up of VRFB stack designs from lab and pilot scale to commercial systems, ensuring performance, reliability, and manufacturability. The role bridges R&D, testing, and production to enable smooth transition into large-scale deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the scale-up of vanadium redox flow battery stacks from prototype to commercial scale while ensuring performance and reliability.
• Develop, assemble, and validate stack designs through structured testing, durability studies, and failure analysis.
• Work closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams to ensure designs are production-ready and cost-effective.
• Establish test rigs, SOPs, and quality benchmarks, and use performance data to drive continuous design improvement.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor/master's or PhD in Mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in electrochemical stack development, preferably in vanadium redox flow batteries, fuel cells, or similar systems.
• Hands-on experience in manufacturing, assembly, performance testing and process development of VRFB stacks, including flow frames, bipolar plates, membranes, gaskets, electrodes, and end plates.
• Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), stack assembly, compression/torque control, sealing, leak prevention, flow distribution, quality inspection, and performance testing, with experience in production scaling and troubleshooting.
• Ability to manage engineering design changes and Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), including manufacturability assessment, design review, BOM/drawing updates, change implementation, validation, and cross-functional coordination.
• Experience with durability testing, failure analysis, and data-driven design improvement.
• Ability to work across R&D, manufacturing, and testing teams in a scale-up or pilot to commercial environment.
