UCSF & UC Berkeley Computational Precision Health (CPH) advances computation for real-world settings to improve the quality, efficiency, and equity of medicine and public health. CPH is building a new discipline at the intersection of machine learning/AI, clinical and public health practice, and equity, leveraging UC Berkeley's world leadership in computer science, engineering, and statistics, UCSF's top-tier clinical care, research, and informatics, and population health at both institutions.
CPH is a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary PhD training program and research center. Its work combines computation with multimodal health data (from electronic health records, images, sensors, clinical notes, public health records, and more) to tailor diagnosis, prevention, and treatment more precisely and effectively to individual patients and communities. CPH offers an exceptional research and training environment with world-class faculty and students, robust high-performance computing, and unmatched access to clinical data, including more than 130 million anonymized clinical notes, 7.5 million medical images, and data from more than 7 million patients across five University of California medical centers. A partnership with UCSF Health allows AI and machine learning tools to be tested in clinical practice. The CPH intellectual community includes more than 80 faculty from multiple disciplines and is embedded within clinical and public health practice settings that reflect the diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
The Systemic Autonomic Neuro Dynamics Lab (SANDLab), led by Sandya Subramanian, Ph.D., combines computation, engineering, and physiology to better understand disease and develop precision health solutions. The lab focuses on the autonomic nervous system, using wearable sensors to capture physiological data in clinical settings and at home that is largely unavailable to the healthcare system today. Through human studies, machine learning, and computational modeling, the lab's work spans areas such as surgical pain, chronic migraine, and multiple sclerosis.
