Provide technical support within the Chemistry Department teaching laboratories to ensure the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of practical teaching. The role is accountable for maintaining laboratory readiness, managing resources and inventory to meet teaching needs, and supporting the successful delivery of assigned modules in coordination with the Teaching Laboratory Operations Manager.
Hours of work will vary between 08:00 – 16:00 and 11:00 – 19:00 depending on the laboratory courses running at the time. However, the role will primarily require working hours of 11:00 – 19:00. Due to the nature of the work some weekend working will be required and there will be restrictions when annual leave may be taken.
Please note this is a 100% on site role. Key working relationships: academic staff, teaching technicians and undergraduate students
We are looking for an organised and proactive individual with experience supporting teaching laboratories and practical classes within a scientific or technical environment. The successful candidate will have strong laboratory skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to provide high-quality technical and teaching support to academic staff and students. You will have experience preparing chemicals, materials and equipment for laboratory teaching, alongside a good understanding of laboratory health and safety procedures, including COSHH, risk assessments and the safe use of PPE. The ability to support and train users on laboratory equipment and instrumentation, develop technical documentation and standard operating procedures, and contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of laboratory spaces will be essential.
The role requires excellent communication, teamwork and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work collaboratively across teaching, technical and operational teams. A flexible and solution-focused approach, together with a commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and well-organised laboratory environments, is key to success in this role.
