Postdoc position in mRNA-LNP structural characterization
Position:
A postdoctoral research position is available in the Nanoassembly Lab at the University of Texas at Austin, focused on structural characterization of mRNA-lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and complementary techniques. We are seeking candidates with a PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong, hands-on SAXS experience (lab-based and/or synchrotron) is required; experience with complementary techniques such as DLS, cryo-EM, or SANS is a plus. This is a fast-moving, highly competitive field, and the ideal candidate is someone who actively reads and tracks the literature and can bring new insights and methods into the lab as the field evolves. You will lead SAXS-driven structural characterization efforts connecting LNP composition and formulation to internal nanostructure and performance, working closely with graduate students and collaborators. In addition to research, you will be expected to help train and mentor students in our collaborative, interdisciplinary team.
Preferred qualifications:
Hands-on SAXS experience (lab-based and/or synchrotron); familiarity with SAXS analysis software (e.g., BioXTAS RAW, SasView, Irena/Nika); experience with LNPs, liposomes, polymersomes, or related soft nanoparticle systems; a demonstrated habit of project management, active reading, conference engagement, and publication record; excellent written and oral communication skills.
Lab:
The Nanoassembly Lab, directed by Prof. Alex Marras, specializes in biomolecular self-assembly for tunable soft materials. This currently includes nanoparticles for nucleic acid delivery, DNA-based mechanisms, and smart biohybrid materials. Our group is very collaborative and team-oriented, with researchers from mechanical, chemical, biomedical, materials science, and pharmaceutical science backgrounds. How to apply:
Send your CV, cover letter, and contact information for references to amarras@utexas.edu. Please describe why you are interested in this position and your goals during and after your postdoc.
