We (@University College London) are looking for multiple creative and motivated postdoctoral research fellows with a strong quantitative background. The candidate should have a PhD in physics, mathematics, biology or a related field.
Our laboratory is inter-disciplinary, consisting of experimentalists and theorists. Our group is tightly knit, and all members are intellectually invested in all projects. Research topics can be chosen jointly by the fellow and the PI, which ensures that an independently-minded fellow can work on a problem that s/he is passionate about.
Our research often uses synthetic microbial communities and mathematical models. Current research topics include: 1) developing theories and performing experiments on artificial selection of microbial communities to improve community functions; 2) making statistical causal inferences from observational time series data; 3) quantitatively understanding gas-mediated microbial interactions; and 4) quantitatively and mechanistically examining how a cooperative microbial community’s ability to survive perturbations might change as cells evolve. We also plan to explore communities of microbes found in natural environments or isolated from the human.
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who seeks the intellectual challenges at the interface of multiple disciplines. Additionally, UCL is situated in central London, with easy access to a tremendous amount of cultural diversity (e.g. 5-min walk to the British Museum). CLOE (Centre for Life’s Origins and Evolution) and Department of GEE (Genetics, Evolution and Environment) provide an interactive and collegial environment. Additionally, UCL offers career development opportunities including training in grant writing and science communications.
To apply, please email Wenying Shou (email@example.com) and attach a single pdf containing: a cover letter describing your scientific interests and long-term goals, curriculum vitae, representative publications, and the contact information for three professional references.
The post is funded for 3 years, with possibilities for extensions.
