Postdoctoral Fellow
Postdoc: Microbial membrane protein structure, mechanism, and physiology Full-time
Position Summary
One or two postdoctoral positions focusing on membrane protein structure and mechanism are available in the lab of Dr. Randy Stockbridge the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan. The Stockbridge Lab integrates structural biology, biochemistry, single molecule biophysics, and microbiology to understand how membrane proteins enable microbes to withstand antimicrobial drugs and other sources of cellular stress. The successful candidate will have access to a vibrant intellectual community and state-of-the-art cryo-EM and laboratory facilities in the new Biological Sciences Building at Michigan.
These positions are supported by two NIH-funded projects, one focused on the discovery and characterization of novel membrane transport proteins, and one focused on the development of new antimicrobial compounds that target dental pathogens. The successful candidate will have opportunities to interact with external collaborators, such as computational biophysicists or medicinal chemists. The position would be ideal for scientists who would like to apply cryo-EM and/or single molecule approaches to achieve an integrative understanding of membrane transport physiology. Openings for postdoctoral researchers are available immediately.
The lab is a part of the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, MI. Our department conducts basic research about the function of all branches of life — bacteria, plants, and animals. We are home to the more 300 students each year who graduate with majors in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology; plant biology; biology, health and society; and microbiology.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate for this position will be expected to carry out independent research relating to membrane protein structure/function. There will also be the potential to develop additional projects building on the strengths, interests, and expertise of the successful candidate.
This position will also involve mentoring of undergraduate researchers in the lab.
Required Qualifications
PhD (by start date) with experience in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or a related field.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in cryo-EM or membrane protein biophysics.

Other information
Preference will be given to applicants who can start in summer or fall 2026. Funding is available for at least two years but is contingent on satisfactory progress in year one. The anticipated starting salary for the position is $60,000 per year plus benefits.
