Laboratory Technician Immunology and Hematopoietic Malignancies, Vardhana Laboratory Full-time

Understanding and reversing T-cell dysfunction remains a major challenge for both adult and pediatric patients with hematopoietic cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma.  We are seeking a research technician with a background in immunology and/or mouse models of infection or cancer to join the Vardhana laboratory to explore immune dysfunction in hematologic malignancies with a particular emphasis on how B-cell depletion impacts naïve T-cell homeostasis.  This work will be carried out within the Vardhana laboratory in the Zuckerman Research Building at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as part of an ongoing collaboration with laboratory of Chrysothemis Brown, MBBS, PhD, whose laboratory has expertise in studying how environmental signals regulate immune cell homeostasis and development.

This represents an exciting opportunity for motivated candidates with interests in basic immunology as well as cancer immunotherapy to contribute their skillset in immunology while gaining expertise in cancer biology and metabolomics.

Responsibilities

• Generate and maintain mouse models of hematopoietic malignancy including standard animal husbandry, genotyping, and breeding.
• Learn basic mouse surgeries including orthotopic tumor implantation, thymectomy, intravenous and intraperitoneal injections, and sacrificing and extracting organs of interest
• Perform experiments using standard immunology techniques (mouse models of infection and cancer including adoptive transfer experiments, tissue processing, multi-parametric flow cytometry, cell sorting, preparation of libraries for bulk and single-cell RNA and ATAC sequencing) with the goal of understanding how B-cell malignancies and B-cell targeting therapies impact T-cell biology
• Maintain detailed records of experimental protocols and data in laboratory notebooks
• Work closely with other cell and molecular biology team members

Job Requirements/Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree from an undergraduate institution is required
• Mouse handling experience is highly desirable but not absolutely required.  However, willingness to engage in mouse handling, including but not limited to: animal husbandry, adoptive transfers, minor surgical procedures, and organ isolation is required.
• Experience with multi-parametric flow cytometry is highly desirable but not required
• Experience with some of the following cell and molecular biology techniques is desirable but not essential: mammalian cell culture, PCR, RT-PCR, cloning, viral transduction, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, protein expression, immunoprecipitation, SDS-PAGE, and Western blots
• The candidate should be scientifically motivated, detail-oriented, and willing to learn new ideas and scientific techniques
• The candidate must be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
