The UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences invites applications for a faculty position. While the goal of the search is focused on junior candidates (to be appointed at the Assistant Professor level), we will consider exceptional candidates with more experience (who could be appointed at Associate or Full Professor). We welcome applications from creative scientists asking fundamental questions and creating innovative technologies to join our interdisciplinary department of investigators.

The department is interested in recruiting new faculty who work at interfaces between scientific disciplines represented within our department (including computational biology, molecular engineering and design, therapeutic bioengineering, systems pharmacology, drug development sciences, pharmacogenomics) and across the entire discovery science community at UCSF (e.g. biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, physiology, neuroscience, human genetics). The department values approaches that connect fundamental discovery and engineering with translational and clinical applications through collaborations across the Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine and UCSF Health.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are at the forefront of developing and applying experimental and computational methods in biomolecular engineering to answer critical problems in discovery science and translation. Applications will be considered from scientists with experimental and/or computational backgrounds. The successful candidate will be proposed for membership in the UCSF Health Innovations Via Engineering (HIVE) center. Candidates are expected to hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Pharm.D./Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.). The successful candidate will have demonstrated significant research accomplishments and present a clearly articulated original research program with the potential to impact discovery science, bioengineering, or have long-term applications to human health.

Candidates must also be committed to the mentorship of students. Candidates will establish an exciting and collaborative research program and join our top-ranked interdisciplinary graduate programs, including the UCSF-UC Berkeley Joint PhD Program in Bioengineering.

1. Biosketch/Curriculum Vitae – note that while we will accept any format, we prefer a NIH Biographical Sketch Common Form with the with the NIH Biographical Sketch Supplement as prepared in ScienCV. We have the following recommendations for how to use the following sections in the supplement:
   • A. Personal statement. This section should describe your overarching research vision and why you are well-suited for our department. Relevant factors may include: aspects of your training; your previous experimental or theoretical work; the collaborators you envision working with at UCSF; how you would benefit from and contribute to the scientific environment at UCSF; the key goals of your future research program. This section replaces a standard cover letter. This section should be no longer than 3500 characters.
   • B. Contributions to Science. Briefly describe up to five of your most significant contributions to science. Each Contribution to Science is limited to 2,000 characters. You may provide in-text, parenthetical references for any publication, not just those listed in the Products section of your Biographical Sketch Common Form that are relevant to the contributions described in this section. You may cite published papers or publicly available preprints deposited on a server (e.g. BioRxiv). We will not accept confidential manuscripts as attachments to the application and do not recommend referencing works that are “in preparation” or “submitted” unless there is a publicly available preprint. These sections replace the standard “prior research accomplishments” statement.
   • Please be sure to include your Persistent Identifier (PID) and make sure it is up to date with your complete publication record.
2. A description of future research plans; Ideally, this is 2 pages, including figures – but not including references.
3. A one-page teaching statement, including formal and informal mentoring activities

Applicants should request three to six reference contacts. Note that we are not asking for a cover letter (that material is largely redundant with section A of the biosketch) or a document of past research (that material is largely redundant with section B of the biosketch) as part of the application material.

The selected candidate must meet all qualifications at the time of application.

Review will begin on November 20, 2026 and continue until the position is filled. The Interviews will occur in two phases. First a short list of candidates will be invited to speak to the committee via video conference in December or January. We anticipate that we will request reference letters at this time. In the second phase, a limited set of candidates will be invited for in-person visits.

The total compensation for this position ranges from $126,800-$332,700. Total compensation at the University of California, San Francisco includes your base salary, which is determined by your rank and step at appointment, and negotiated pay for Health Sciences Compensation Plan members.
