Tenure Track Faculty Position – Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences
The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) announces a search for a tenure track faculty position in the Sociology Program to be filled by September 1, 2027. We invite applicants at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank for scholars conducting theoretically-driven, empirical research on the sociology of health and illness.
Applicants must have (or be in the process of obtaining) a PhD in Sociology. Application materials must indicate the PhD completion date or expected completion date. Candidates must have the required degree by time of hire. Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission. Successful candidates should have expertise in medical sociology and health equity. We especially encourage applications from individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Science and Technology Studies; Sociology of the Body and Disability Studies; Reproductive Health and Justice; Health Equity and Justice; Mental Health; Population Health.
Candidates must be able to teach in the Advanced Quantitative Methods series as well as several courses in sociological theory. In addition to their area of expertise, we expect candidates to be able to teach and mentor across theoretical and methodological approaches. Candidates should demonstrate excellence in teaching, mentorship, and research, including an established portfolio of externally funded research. We expect the successful candidate to be active in the discipline of sociology and to contribute to a campus environment that fosters inclusive excellence for all students. Candidates at the senior level must be willing and able to contribute to the leadership of the department.
The Doctoral Program in Sociology at UCSF offers a unique PhD program, and one of the most in-depth curricula in the U.S., focused on the sociology of health, illness, medicine, and healthcare systems. It is a doctoral level program only; UCSF does not have an undergraduate student population. The principal aim of the Doctoral Program in Sociology is to educate students interested in professional careers as sociologists in academic and/or applied contexts. UCSF is one of few institutions solely dedicated to the study of health both domestically and globally.
The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences houses the Doctoral Program in Sociology and is one of four departments in the School of Nursing. While the successful candidate's primary responsibility will be to the Doctoral Program in Sociology, they may also be asked to teach and advise in the nursing PhD program.

The total compensation for this position ranges from $107,300 – $332,700.
Total compensation at the University of California, San Francisco includes your base salary, which is determined by your rank and step at appointment, and negotiated pay for Health Sciences Compensation Plan members. Faculty who are members of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan may also be eligible for additional incentive pay.
