The Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service is seeking a full-time Section Chief of Microbiology at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VAHCS), a major academic affiliate of University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Applicants must hold either an M.D. or M.D/ Ph.D. degrees, with either a current California medical license or eligibility for California medical licensure, and be board certified in Clinical Pathology (CP), Anatomic & Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) or Infectious Disease (ABIM-ID). Subspecialty board certification/eligibility and/or experience in Medical Microbiology is preferred. Additional interest in molecular diagnostics and/or clinical laboratory management is highly desirable. Physician-scientists with interest in basic or translational laboratory-based research are particularly encouraged to apply.

The appointee to the position will hold an academic appointment at UCSF at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Clinical X or HS Clinical series, which emphasizes strong commitment to excellence in clinical service and teaching, or the In Residence series, which emphasizes strong commitment to research as well as clinical service. Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching (at both resident/fellow and medical student levels) is preferred. Basic, clinical and/or translational research and scholarly activities are required for faculty appointees in the Clinical X or In Residence series. Preference will be given to candidates with an established or developing physician-scientist profile and a track record of clinical excellence and scholarly achievement.
The successful candidate will be a member of a team of Clinical Pathologists responsible for the daily operations of the Laboratory Medicine Service at San Francisco VAHCS, which is a major UCSF-affiliated teaching hospital. The Laboratory Medicine Service provides diagnostic testing including advanced molecular microbiology testing and hematopathology services to the VAHCS, a comprehensive network that provides health services to Veterans throughout northern California. The successful candidate will be responsible for management of the Microbiology Section at VAHCS and will work closely with Infectious Diseases and Infection Control teams.
