Lund University, Science Faculty, Department of Physics
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top universities. The University has around 46,000 students and 8,500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. With 16 beamlines in operation, it receives more than 1700 users annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.
MAX IV operates two storage rings and a linear accelerator to produce synchrotron radiation. Its largest accelerator, the 3 GeV electron storage ring, was the first in the world to use a multi-bend-achromat lattice, enabling ultrahigh-brightness light with extremely low emittance. Only a few such next-generation storage rings exist today, though many facilities worldwide are now upgrading in this direction.
To stay at the forefront, MAX IV is designing a major upgrade of the 3 GeV ring, called MAX 4 U, aiming to deliver outstanding improvements in light source performance.
You will be working in the Accelerator Development group at MAX IV as well as in the Accelerator Physics group at the Division of Synchrotron Radiation Research. The Accelerator Development group consists of a wide variety of experts within the accelerator field, including accelerator physicists, magnet- RF- and laser experts and is a part of the MAX IV Accelerator Division, which is responsible for developing and operating all accelerator-based light sources at MAX IV. This division is also charged with carrying out the major accelerator upgrade in the MAX 4 U project. The Accelerator Physics group at the Division of Synchrotron Radiation Research has decades of experience in accelerator physics, ranging from storage rings to linear accelerators, with a focus on synchrotron light sources and free-electron lasers.
As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a doctoral student, you will be trained in a scientific approach. In short, you will be trained to think critically and analytically, to solve problems independently using the right methods, and to develop an awareness of research ethics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, to develop your leadership and pedagogical skills. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies end with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

We are offering a PhD position in accelerator physics focused on design, optimization, and control of advanced storage ring lattices for the MAX IV upgrade project MAX4 U.
You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral education, which mainly consists of writing a doctoral thesis.
Your PhD project combines simulations, method development, and experimental studies at the MAX IV Laboratory including the following:
In addition to studies, a maximum of 20% of working time may be spent on teaching and other departmental work.
This will include teaching and leading laboratory exercises for students, as well as duties for operation of the MAX IV accelerators.
To be eligible for admission and employment as a doctoral student, you must fulfil the requirements below.
A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if the applicant:
A person meets the specific admission requirements for third cycle studies in Physics if the applicant has:
In order to complete the doctoral programme in question, the following are also required:
The selection of eligible applicants will be made taking into account the ability to benefit from the training based on the following criteria:
Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme.
The employment is a fixed-term employment at full time, starting as soon as possible. Third cycle studies at the Faculty of Science consist of full-time studies for 4 years. In the case of teaching and other departmental duties, the employment is extended accordingly. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
The application should be written in English and you must attach to your application:
