School of Engineering Sciences at KTH
Project description: Third-cycle subject: Biological Physics
The Hannebelle Lab at the Division of Biophysics, Department of Applied Physics, studies the physical mechanisms of infection. We are based at KTH and SciLifeLab in Stockholm. We are seeking a PhD student to study the biophysics of schistosome skin infection. Schistosomiasis affects over 200 million people worldwide and is among the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases. Infection begins when schistosome parasites penetrate intact human skin from freshwater, a multi-hour process that remains largely uncharacterized in biophysical terms. Using in-vivo-mimetic systems, this project will investigate how these parasites find, penetrate, migrate through, and exit the skin, and what physical mechanisms govern each step. The work is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together microfluidics and organ-on-chip platforms, custom microscopy, cell culture, 3D printing and hardware design, and biophysical modeling. We do not expect applicants to arrive with expertise in all of these. What matters most is a demonstrated ability to learn new methods, a willingness to work across disciplines, and genuine curiosity about how physical principles shape biological processes. We are a young research group with a bold scientific vision, committed to supporting each member's growth into a skilled and independent researcher. You will join us at SciLifeLab in Solna.
Supervision: Martin Viklund and Melanie Hannebelle is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
Admission requirements: To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
The applicant should preferably have a Master's degree in infection biology, biophysics, applied physics, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
Selection: In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
The project is highly interdisciplinary: microfluidics, cell culture, parasite handling, custom microscopy, 3D printing, and biophysical modeling. Prior experience in some of these is valued, but not expected in all. Above all, we look for a demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to learn new methods.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Information regarding admission and employment: Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
As a doctoral student, you are entitled to a workplace with many employee benefits and monthly salary according to KTH's Doctoral student salary agreement. Read more about Doctoral studies (PhD) | KTH | Sweden.
To apply for the position: Apply for the position and admission through KTH's recruitment system. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application is complete in accordance with the instructions in the advertisement.
Applications must include the following elements:
Applications must be received at the last closing date at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/Central European Summer Time).
