About the Institution & Lab
The Institute of Physics of São Carlos at the University of São Paulo (IFSC-USP) is an internationally recognized center for scientific research in South America. Our theoretical and computational quantum matter group focuses on pioneering electronic structure theory, topological physics, light–matter interactions, and multiscale modeling of novel two-dimensional materials and heterostructures.
About the Position & Job Duties
The postdoctoral fellow will develop multiscale theoretical models to investigate optoelectronic, photonic, and non-equilibrium phenomena in moiré quantum matter.
Key responsibilities and duties include:
Developing multiscale theoretical frameworks to investigate optoelectronic and photonic responses in 2D heterostructures;
Studying polaritons and their topological, chiral, and non-equilibrium light–matter properties;
Modeling nonlinear quantum responses from first-principles and effective Hamiltonians;
Expanding in-house computational tools for ab initio-derived electronic and optical Hamiltonians;
Collaborating with theoretical and experimental research thrusts focused on quantum materials and emerging quantum technologies.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
Mandatory Requirements:
PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline;
Solid experience in theoretical and computational modeling of optoelectronic/photonic properties and/or nonlinear quantum responses in 2D materials;
Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in theoretical and computational condensed matter physics.
Desirable Qualifications:
Background in van der Waals heterostructures and/or moiré materials;
Proficiency in scientific software development (e.g., Python, Julia) and open-source code management (GitHub);
Demonstrated ability to work within interdisciplinary and international collaborations.
Funding & Benefits
This position is funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) under Grant Process Number 2025/11526-0.
The position offers:
Monthly Stipend: R$ 12.300,00 (tax-free);
Research Contingency Fund (Reserva Técnica): Equivalent to 10% of the annual fellowship value for conference attendance, computing resources, and research equipment;
Relocation Allowance (Auxílio-Instalação): Financial support for candidates moving to São Carlos from another city, state, or country according to FAPESP rules.
