The UCL Department of Space and Climate Physics is a leading research and teaching department and the UK's largest university space research group. The department participates in international space science projects by providing custom instrumentation, hardware and/or software products and also by exploiting and interpreting the scientific aspects of the data that these projects obtain. The department is therefore a centre of space science and engineering expertise. Within the Department, the Technology Management Group (TMG) develops and applies expertise in systems engineering, technology management and project management. Originally established to support the delivery of complex space missions, this knowledge has subsequently been applied beyond the space sector. The TMG undertakes teaching, industrial training, research and consultancy, supporting activities across UCL, partner organisations and industry. Much of this work is delivered through the UCL Centre for Systems Engineering (UCLse), which is hosted within TMG.
An important facet of this is the provision of modular MSc courses in Technology Management, Systems Engineering Management and Management of Complex Projects. Open short courses and industrial training courses in Systems Engineering and Project Management are also offered to a range of customers in the UK and overseas. Building on our close links to industry, we have developed master's degree apprenticeships in Systems Engineering and Transformation Leadership in the past. All of our courses promote the value of using systems thinking to manage risk successfully and to deliver effective and sustainable change in the presence of increasing complexity.
The teaching delivered by the TMG spans a wide range of industries including aerospace, rail, defence and security, automotive, healthcare, construction and consumer technology. Through its internationally recognised space research and engineering activities, the Department has strong connections within the space sector. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching, training and industry engagement activities within the Department and the UCL Centre for Systems Engineering, including those related to the space sector.
This is a teaching-focused position at Grade 8, aligned with UCL's education-focused (Teaching) track. The post-holder will contribute primarily to the delivery, development, and enhancement of teaching and the student learning experience. Please note that this is not a research-focused role
The successful applicant will:
We are seeking to appoint a teaching focused Lecturer in Systems Engineering. Applicants should have a strong background in systems engineering, ideally with experience in the space sector or closely related high technology industries, and an ability to contribute to teaching and training activities linked to space systems, space missions or space engineering courses.
Note that teaching is mostly delivered face to face in London (and occasionally elsewhere, including overseas). Staff are able to work in a hybrid mode with the expectation that 2 days per week are spent in the London office.
Successful candidates will hold a Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Engineering, Technology Management or a closely related discipline, or possess equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrable expertise and professional experience in systems engineering, technology management and/or project management, preferably within the space sector or other complex high technology industries such as aerospace, defence, rail or advanced engineering.
Ability to deliver high quality teaching in systems engineering, technology management and/or project management across Master's level courses, industrial training and short course delivery including the ability to supervise MSc student projects and academic work.
The Department is family-friendly and welcomes applications from individuals seeking part-time or flexible working arrangements, subject to the operational requirements of the role. The Department has been awarded the Institute of Physics Juno Practitioner. The aim of Project Juno is to recognise and reward physics departments, schools, institutes and organisations that can demonstrate they have taken action to address gender equality in physics and to encourage better practice for all staff.
As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
