We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in medical technology development and research who would like to contribute to the development of future diagnostic and treatment solutions in women's health. You will work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems at KTH, where engineers, clinicians, and researchers collaborate to address important healthcare challenges. In this project, you will work closely with clinical collaborators at Karolinska University Hospital and international researchers in medical image analysis and biomechanical simulation.
Our research focuses on biomechanical imaging and modelling to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a wide range of injuries and diseases. In this project, we are developing novel technologies to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and rehabilitation of childbirth-related injuries to the female pelvic floor muscles, an area that has long been under-researched despite affecting millions of women worldwide. The project combines advanced medical imaging, including ultrasound, MRI, and elastography, with image analysis, image registration, and personalized simulation models of the pelvic floor. The goal is to improve our understanding of injury mechanisms, identify risk factors, and enable future patient-specific treatment strategies.
The project is funded by InspireLab, KTH's initiative for research and innovation that promotes gender equality in society.
Supervision: Prof. Matilda Larsson (KTH), Emilia Rotstein (KI) and Dr. Zhongzheng Wang (KTH) are proposed to supervise the doctoral student
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
Candidates should have an engineering background in biomedical engineering, engineering physics, computer science, or a related field.
Furthermore, the candidate should also be able to demonstrate an interest in developing and applying advanced imaging methods in simulation-based research.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
Target degree : Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
As a doctoral student, you are entitled to a workplace with many employee benefits and monthly salary according to KTH's Doctoral student salary agreement . Read more about Doctoral studies (PhD) | KTH | Sweden .
