Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory
The Department of Chemistry – Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.
Work duties:
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.
The research project involves the development of a fast X-ray light modulator to be used at synchrotron facilities. The aim of the modulator is to enable time-resolved measurements on the nanosecond timescale, building upon steady-state (continuous) techniques. The modulator will be tested at MAX IV, Elettra, and other synchrotron facilities.
This project is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. A more detailed description is available at: https://strategiska.se/forskning/pagaende-forskning/instrument-technique-and-method-development-2024/projekt/14310/
The position consists primarily (>80%) of research duties, including supervision of Master's and PhD students, with possible teaching and administrative responsibilities.
The project is carried out in collaboration with the company Sectris AB and will be conducted within the Physical Chemistry group at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström.
Requirements:
The applicant must have:
-A PhD degree or equivalent in Physics or Chemistry or Engineering, with experience in relevant subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
-At least two years of research experience in hands-on experimental technique development. Experience limited to instrument responsibility or maintenance or to data analysis or modeling alone is not sufficient. Experience in X-ray techniques or synchrotron radiation handling has priority.
-Strong interest in fundamental physico-chemical processes
The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skills. Greater importance is attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the amount of publications.
Importantly, we place high value on personal suitability. High consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant's experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development. A collaborative attitude and a positive approach to teamwork are essential, as we aim to maintain an open, supportive, and enjoyable working environment.
Please state if and how artificial intelligence has been used in the application.
Desirable qualifications:
Priority will be given to applicants who have advanced knowledge and/or practical experience in at least one of the following subjects:
– development of X-ray optics or light modulation
– X-ray optics materials
– spectroscopy methods or instrument development
– high-frequency light modulation
– synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopy
About the employment: The employment is a temporary position of 2 years with possibility of extension of 1 year according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date: as soon as possible. Placement: the Ångström laboratory (Uppsala).
