Research Position in Sustainable Mining

As part of the Centre for Environmental Responsibility in Mining (CERM), you will work alongside an interdisciplinary team tackling complex environmental challenges across the mining lifecycle. This is a research-focused academic position, offering the opportunity to build capability, contribute meaningfully to industry-facing projects, and develop a growing research profile within a supportive and ambitious community.

The role may also involve national and international travel for short periods to support research and industry engagement.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Conduct impactful research in sustainable water management and contribute to industry-focused consultancy projects.
• Develop and contribute to research funding applications and collaborate on joint initiatives with colleagues and partners.
• Publish research outputs and prepare high-quality reports, scientific articles, and training materials.
• Support student supervision and contribute to researcher development and academic citizenship.

Additionally for level B:

• Develop an independent and or collaborative research program to achieve national recognition and impact
• Produce high-quality research outputs, including publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings, taking a lead role in some outputs
• Actively seek, obtain and manage competitive research funding, contributing as a Chief Investigator where appropriate
• Contribute to knowledge translation, including industry engagement and impact through application or commercialisation of research
• Demonstrate effective supervision and development of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students
• Build productive internal and external collaborations with industry, government and the broader community, and contribute to service and governance activities

You are an inquisitive and collaborative researcher with a passion for advancing sustainable outcomes in the mining sector. You thrive in a team environment and are motivated to deliver high-quality research with real-world impact.

You will demonstrate:

• A Masters or PhD in engineering, environmental science, or a closely related discipline
• Strong analytical and numerical capability, including experience with modelling, GIS and coding (for example Python)
• Experience in research and or consultancy, ideally related to water management or mining
• Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to produce high-quality scientific reports and publications
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders
• A commitment to supervision and mentoring of students

For Level B appointment, you will additionally demonstrate:

• A developing research profile, including a track record of publications in reputable refereed journals
• Experience contributing to or leading research funding applications and managing funded projects
• Demonstrated supervision experience of Honours or Higher Degree by Research students
• Evidence of engagement in internal service roles and external professional or industry activities
