We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join an exciting NHS Genomic Network of Excellence (GNoE) on 'Severe presentation of infectious and immune disease'. The GNoE aims to transform the understanding and management of patients with life-threatening infectious disease through the application of novel genomic technologies in pathogen detection and host immunity profiling. Within the GNoE, you will join a work package focused on advancing the use of host immune profiling using -omics and related approaches for critically ill patients.
Your primary responsibilities will include analysis of data arising from the programme including host genomic sequencing data, pathogen metagenomics. You will apply computational and statistical methodologies and develop code and informatics resources to support the analysis and integration of large datasets. You will manage your own academic research and associated activities, contribute ideas for new research projects and funding opportunities, and contribute to scientific publications and presentations. Working collaboratively with academic, NHS and industry partners, you will contribute to the development of genomic data use within patient care pathways.
It is essential that you hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in Genetics, Genomics, Statistical Genetics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Mathematics and Physics, Computer Science or a related discipline, and possess sufficient specialist knowledge to work within an established research programme. You will have research experience in genomics, including analysis of high throughput data and its application to functional genomics, and demonstrated competence in scientific computing using at least one programming language. You will have excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to think critically about scientific analyses to ensure robust results, together with evidence of problem-solving, accuracy, self-motivation and integrity. You will also have experience of contributing to research proposals and presentations, the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation, and excellent communication and organisational skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, represent the research group at meetings, and deliver work to the required standard and agreed schedule.
