Position title: Postdoctoral Scholar in Development Neurobiology

Salary range: $69,073 – $82,836

Position description:

The Xian-Jie Yang lab at the University of California, Los Angeles, is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral scholars with expertise in molecular and cell biology to study retinal degenerative diseases and to develop effective therapies.

The research of Yang lab focuses on retinal neuroscience especially how retinal metabolism changes during aging and under disease conditions. The lab uses advanced research approaches for gene function perturbation, coupled with cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and advanced imaging analyses to unravel disease mechanisms. In addition, the lab has established human optic nerve disease models using pluripotent stem cell technology and is in the process developing gene therapies for a major inherited optic atrophy.

The successful candidate will be exposed to advanced biomedical research approaches in the Yang lab ranging from human stem cell models, in vitro neuronal cultures, metabolic analysis, super resolution imaging, to in vivo cell type specific gene perturbation and viral vector-mediated gene delivery. The fellow will participate in a variety of academic activities, such as lab meetings, departmental and campus symposiums, as well as international conferences in the vision field. The fellow will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with active scientists to cultivate scientific expertise, develop innovative ideas and potential independence. Responsibilities:

· Lead the project of a new retinal degeneration model, investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms caused by the specific gene deletion using a variety of advanced approaches, including cellular marker analysis using confocal and super resolution imaging, multiomics analyses to examine transcriptome, epigenome, and metabolome.

· Coordinate and collaborate to perform visual function assays at electrophysiology and behavior levels.

· Organize and analyze data for internal and external presentations. Prepare and submit findings for publications in scientific journals.

Qualifications:

Basic qualifications: Ph.D. in biology with solid genetics, biochemistry, and molecular training and with experiences in bench experimental research and familiar with basic molecular biology techniques.

Additional qualifications: Excellent communication and writing skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team.
