Karolinska Institutet is looking for a professor of osteoporosis, combined with clinical employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or senior physician at an appropriate healthcare unit within Karolinska University Hospital. The position, which is established as a result of a special donation, will be placed at one of the departments on Campus Syd (Flemingsberg) depending on the recruited professor's focus and wishes. The professorship aims to strengthen research, education and clinical development in osteoporosis, in close collaboration between.
Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease characterized by low bone density and deterioration of the microarchitecture of bone tissue, leading to an increased risk of fractures. The disease is one of the most undertreated diseases in Sweden, despite its high prevalence and serious consequences. In Region Stockholm, more than 10,000 fractures related to osteoporosis occur annually, which provides unique research opportunities.
The proposed professorship is intended to constitute an academic leadership function within the planned Stockholm Osteoporosis Centre (SOC), made possible by a generous donation from Ebbe and Lena Krook. The SOC will be integrated with the newly established clinical knowledge centre for osteoporosis by Region Stockholm, located at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge but with several interfaces with other university healthcare units in Stockholm. By linking SOC to the region's knowledge centre, excellent opportunities are created for research, education and development in osteoporosis.
As a professor of osteoporosis, you are part of the management of the SOC initiative crucial to the ambition to strengthen clinical and translational research and care in osteoporosis. You are expected to conduct your own research of high international quality in the subject area and at the same time contribute to the strategic development of a strong research environment in osteoporosis at Karolinska Institutet. The position includes leading and developing research, attracting external funding, supervising doctoral students and postdocs, and contributing to education at undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels. The clinical part of the combined employment will contribute to the development of care, prevention and knowledge building in the field of osteoporosis in Karolinska University Hospital.
The academic affiliation must take place with one of the six departments at Campus Syd. Which one is most suitable depends on your research methodology and research focus. Examples include epidemiological, clinical or experimental research on patients with recurrent fractures, identification of new phenotypes and genotypes for severe osteoporosis, development of individualized treatment strategies, including gene therapies and biologics, studies of screening methods, including AI-based tools for risk identification, and research on osteoporosis.
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated very good pedagogical skills and excellent scientific skills and, clinical skills. It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment. The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in a specialty suitable for the subject at Karolinska University Hospital. Therefore, you must hold a Swedish medical license, a specialist certificate in the specialty in question and meet the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR. )
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2), leadership and collaboration skills (2) and clinical skills (2).
