Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
We are looking for a research assistant to the research group of Axel Abelein. The research group studies protein misfolding and amyloid structures related to neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The working space is located in Neo, KI Campus South in Flemingsberg, at the Department of Medicine Huddinge. The group is part of the laboratory of bioinspired protein drugs and technologies, hosting three groups with researchers at different career stages. Hence, the lab provides a stimulating and supportive environment for young scientists who like to develop their biochemical/biophysical skills. More information about the group and research can be found at our homepage: Axel Abelein’s research group and Laboratory of bioinspired protein drugs and technologies.
You will contribute to research projects concerning (1) the seeding activity of human CSF samples and (2) the study of the anti-amyloid BRICHOS chaperone and its inhibitory effect on amyloid formation in neurodegenerative disorders. The projects are multidisciplinary and combine protein biochemistry and structural biology in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. The research assistant will assist in experimental work related to these projects and will plan the experiments, analyze the data and interpret and summarize the results. The work will be conducted both independently and together with other team members.
The employment is a fixed-term position for one year.
This project covers many areas, including gene cloning and mutagenesis, recombinant protein production and purification, analytical biochemistry assays, optical spectroscopy, and protein aggregation kinetics. Suitable backgrounds of the candidate include studies in (bio-)chemistry, (bio-)physics, biotechnology, life science, biomedicine, or similar topics.
The candidate should have theoretical knowledge and practical experience in at least some of the described biochemical and/or biophysical techniques. Experience in working with amyloidogenic proteins and molecular chaperone-like proteins in the context of amyloid formation is advantageous.
The successful candidate is expected to have a strong drive to pursue research, be organized and structured, work independently and have an ambitious and innovative attitude. The project is cross-disciplinary and pursued in collaboration with other research groups, and hence good collaborative skills are necessary. Emphasis will be put on personal skills in the evaluation process. Very good ability to speak and write in English is a requirement.
