Research Assistant within Mechanisms of Neuroinflammation

The research group led by Dr Olivia Thomas at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, is seeking a motivated and organised Research Assistant to join an ongoing project investigating how Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)–specific T cells contribute to neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS). You will work in a dynamic and collaborative neuroimmunology research environment and gain hands-on experience in advanced cellular and immunological techniques applied to human disease.

Your mission

As a Research Assistant, you will be actively involved in experimental work aimed at characterising human T cell responses in multiple sclerosis. Your main tasks will include:

• Experimental work involving human blood samples, including isolation and handling of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)
• In vitro culture and stimulation of human T cells
• Immunological assays such as flow cytometry, fluorescence‑activated cell sorting (FACS), FluoroSpot, and ELISpot
• Data handling, basic analysis and documentation of experimental results
• Lab record keeping, organisation, and contribution to maintaining a well‑functioning laboratory environment
• Assisting with general laboratory duties and contributing to ongoing projects within the group

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and well‑organised candidate with a strong interest in immunology and neuroinflammation.

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences, medicine, biotechnology, immunology or a related field
• Practical experience with laboratory‑based biomedical research
• Experience handling human blood samples
• Experience with flow cytometry and flow cytometry assisted cell sorting (FACS)
• Experience with in vitro culture and stimulation of T cells
• Experience with FluoroSpot and/or ELISpot assays
• Good organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate lab records
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Meritorious qualifications:

• Master's degree in a relevant field
• Experience with data analysis in GraphPad Prism or R
• Experience with analysis of flow cytometry data analysis in FlowJo and/or R
• Experience with immune receptor sequencing, including single‑cell technologies
