Research Engineer at the Department of Ecology and Genetics

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to ecosystem studies.

We are now looking for a research engineer to the department of Ecology and Genetics.

Duties

The research engineer will primarily work in IEG's shared molecular laboratory and be part of the department's coordinated lab organization, thereby contributing to other joint tasks connected to the laboratory's overall activities. The research engineer will also develop protocols for library preparation and large-scale robotic sample processing, as well as introduce new users.

The duties will include laboratory work, risk assessments, safety introductions, reproducible data handling, possibly some fieldwork, support for students and researchers, and coordination within the laboratory. Responsibilities such as chemical safety officer, fire safety representative, or similar roles may be included, as well as contributing to securing external funding for new equipment.

Qualifications Required

We are seeking a qualified individual with a master education in a relevant field related to genetics. The candidate should have strong skills in laboratory organization, and expert knowledge and hands-on experience in molecular laboratory methods, including DNA and RNA extraction, quantitative RNA/DNA measurements (qPCR/ddPCR) and preparation of sequencing libraries. Because the department works extensively with non-model organisms, the ability to develop, adapt and troubleshoot workflows for species without established protocols is necessary, as is the ability of handling large sample sets for population-genomics projects.

Strong ability to communicate in spoken and written English is required. We are looking for a highly organized and independent individual who works methodically according to good research practice to ensure reproducible data generation. You should overall have excellent collaborative skills as well as experience with, or potential for, working in complex projects in a rapidly developing research environment.

Qualifications Desired

Experience with high-molecular-weight DNA extraction for long-read technologies and epigenomic protocols (e.g., bisulfite-seq, ATAC-seq) is highly meritorious, as is familiarity with functional assays such as CRISPR. Competence in high-throughput or automated/robotic laboratory workflows is also advantageous. The applicant should further have a basic understanding of bioinformatic QC requirements to ensure smooth integration with downstream analyses. Experience in supervision of students in lab is highly meritorious. A PhD in genomics or related field is a merit. Ability to communicate in spoken and written Swedish is an advantage.
