The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is one of the largest Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering departments in the UK. The Department is proud to host internationally-leading research groups covering a broad range of activities and spread over several sites. Our staff and students have a diverse range of interests and expertise, covering many areas of physics, engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics. Our focus is on excellent academic research in identifying new technologies and methods for diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases using medical imaging, physiological monitoring, and the development of implanted devices. We also offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
The Advanced X-Ray Imaging (AXIm) group is a multi-PI group, hosted within the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, that develops novel X-ray image formation techniques and deploys them with the latest developments in source and detector technology.
We have an opportunity to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to the AXIm group. The post is part of an international collaboration with cutting-edge x-ray industry from the Republic of Korea, with options to travel to Seoul and engage directly with the industrial collaborators.
The aim of the project is to develop novel x-ray microscopy methods that go beyond current capabilities. AXIm has recently achieved world-first results in the 3D imaging of intact, unstained biological tissue where every single cell and cell nucleus is visualized. This project will significantly expand these capabilities into much larger volumes and across different materials.
Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position to join a collaborative effort with leading x-ray industry in the Republic of Korea and other partners to develop innovative, laboratory-based x-ray microscopy that goes beyond the currently available capabilities.
The post offers a unique opportunity to conduct research and development at an international leading university and contribute to the developments of advanced x-ray methods for the life and physical sciences. UCL's AXIm group is internationally recognised as a leading group in the development of x-ray phase contrast and other cutting-edge x-ray imaging methods. The appointed person will be formally part of the team led by Prof Sandro Olivo and be co-supervised by him and Dr Michela Esposito, who leads the microscopy activities.
The postholder will be required to design, build and commission an innovative x-ray instrument, and to validate it on cutting-edge scientific and industrial applications. The role will also involve preparing and presenting findings of research activity to colleagues for review purposes, contributing to the drafting and submitting of papers to appropriate peer-reviewed journals, preparing progress reports on research for funding bodies and other stakeholders, and contributing to the overall activities of the research team and department as required.
For more information about this role, please contact Prof Sandro Olivo, a.olivo@ucl.ac.uk, or Dr Michela Esposito, michela.esposito@ucl.ac.uk
