The successful candidate will be part of the CeLSIUS team, based in the Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, located within the Institute of Epidemiology & Health Care, UCL. This department conducts timely, rigorous and independent research with sound statistical methods into a better understanding of health and the prevention of ill health. Our research has significant real-world impact, informing policy and practice both in the United Kingdom and globally.
The CeLSIUS team provides support to UK academic, statutory and voluntary sector users of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Longitudinal Study (LS). ONS maintains the dataset and provides core documentation while CeLSIUS provides an expert interface to the data. This involves helping users with the specification of projects, creating data extracts, running analyses and providing a wide range of training and information resources accessible via the CeLSIUS pages on UCL's website.
This is a fixed-term contract with external funding for three years in the first instance. The role is available as either Research Fellow (Grade 7 £45,103 – £52,586) or Senior Research Fellow (Grade 8 £54,931 – £64,644) depending on qualifications and experience. Salaries are inclusive of London Allowance. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 25 (salary £38,607 per annum inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa. A DBS is required for this role.
You will have a PhD in quantitative social sciences or a relevant discipline (or equivalent research experience) with a significant quantitative component; knowledge of UK Census / longitudinal social survey data; ability to use STATA or R; experience in statistical methods; data management skills; ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively; and ability to manage time, use initiative, prioritise workload and work to strict deadlines. You will have carried out high quality original quantitative research, leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals.
