A major focus of Dr. Roddie's UCL Translation Team at the UCL Cancer Institute is the manipulation of T-cells for therapeutic applications. The main purpose of this position is to genetically modify CAR T cells using molecular biology and gene editing approaches, including CRISPR-mediated gene knockout, to investigate and enhance CAR T-cell function. The role involves performing a range of molecular and cellular assays to assess CAR T-cell performance, including their proliferation, cytotoxicity, persistence, phenotype, and other functional characteristics. Training in relevant techniques will be provided.
The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative group of scientists and will be expected to actively assist and participate in all aspects of the research, as well as in the basic maintenance of the laboratory.
This position will be funded for 6 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.
Applications should include a CV and a Cover Letter: In the Cover Letter, please provide evidence of the essential and desirable criteria in the Person Specification part of the Job Description. (By including a Cover Letter, you can leave blank the 'Why you have applied for this role' field in the application form, which is limited in the number of characters it will allow.)
The job does not meet the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa certificate of sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL will not be able to sponsor individuals who require the right to work in the UK to carry out this role.
You will hold a degree in Biological Sciences or a related discipline and have experience in aseptic cell culture and routine molecular biology techniques. An interest in immunotherapy, particularly CAR T-cell research, would be advantageous.
You will be highly organized, with excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills, and the ability to follow protocols accurately while managing competing priorities.
The successful candidate will be a motivated and collaborative team player with a commitment to high-quality research, continuous learning, and working effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Experience of molecular cloning, nucleic acid extraction, flow cytometry, or a postgraduate qualification would be beneficial.
