Join us in making a real impact on Indigenous health by pushing the boundaries of genomics research. If you are passionate about improving Indigenous health outcomes in active partnerships with Indigenous communities, we invite you to apply for this challenging and rewarding position at NCIG.
The Research Fellow will undertake discovery research at the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics (NCIG) using large-scale genomic datasets, with a focus on developing and applying computational methods, algorithms and software for genomic analysis. The role will include empirical evaluation and benchmarking to improve the accuracy, utility and impact of NCIG genomic resources for Indigenous Australians. The position will report to Associate Professor Patel at the John Curtin School of Medical Research and work with NCIG researchers, Indigenous community partners and national and international collaborators. Opportunities will include leading publications, contributing to funding proposals, supervising research students and participating in seminars, conferences and research committees.
As a member of our NCIG team, you will work closely with eminent external agencies and collaborators both nationally and internationally to deliver outcomes for research, engagement and outreach from projects. Your leadership in relevant research activities (seminars, conferences, committees), and exposure to cutting-edge Indigenous genomics research and the vibrant JCSMR research community will provide for fulfilling research experience.
We are seeking an early or mid career researcher with expertise in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, quantitative biology or a related field. The successful candidate will have strong computational and analytical skills, experience with DNA sequencing technologies and large-scale genomic datasets, and a record of high-quality research. The candidate will work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams. They will be committed to respectful, responsible and community-engaged research and willing to develop their understanding of Indigenous Data Sovereignty and culturally appropriate genomics practice.
The John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University provides a collaborative research environment supported by advanced infrastructure and strong national and international partnerships. Based within the School, the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics works in partnership with Indigenous Australian communities to develop genomic resources and research capability. NCIG is currently generating telomere-to-telomere reference genomes and population-scale catalogues of genomic variation to improve Indigenous representation in genomics and support equitable healthcare outcomes.
