Myeloma starts as a pre-cancerous condition called smouldering myeloma, of whom 50% will develop myeloma over the first 5 years after diagnosis. We run a national clinical observational study for patients with smouldering myeloma (COSMOS). We also run a Phase 2 interventional trial (Modify) for people with smouldering myeloma who are at high risk of developing myeloma. The lab receives and analyses patient bone marrow and blood cells from the COSMOS and MODIFY studies to investigate tumour biology and immune function. We also receive material from newly diagnosed myeloma patients treated on the national Phase 3 trial, RADAR. These samples give us a unique opportunity to study how tumour and immune system co-evolve in the bone marrow, and the effects of treatment on tumour biology, and the immune microenvironment.
This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated science graduate to join the myeloma research group in the Cancer Institute at UCL. You will join a group of scientists and clinical researchers who study the biology and immunology of myeloma, a bone marrow cancer that affects older people, and is incurable. We want to understand how myeloma develops and how tumour cells interact with the immune environment in the bone marrow.
The post-holder will work within a team of laboratory and clinician scientists to undertake translational work for the COSMOS and MODIFY trials. The post holder will work with blood and bone marrow samples, maintain sample archive and database, and prepare material for downstream assays, including flow and mass cytometry, sequencing and multiplex immunofluorescence imaging. The post-holder will also provide support to current projects within the myeloma group, and be expected to develop and drive a project of their own. The post-holder will work under the direct supervision of Prof Kwee Yong (group leader), with day-to-day supervision and support provided by post-doctoral scientists, PhD students and technicians in the group. The post-holder will be encouraged to contribute to the design of the experiments, to set up novel assays as required, and be expected to acquire a good background knowledge of the field, will analyse the data and present at group and departmental meetings.
Funding is for 12 months in the first instance, with a 6-month probationary period.

You must hold a BSc (minimum 2:1) in a relevant scientific discipline and have experience working in a laboratory environment, including processing human samples, cell culture, and maintaining accurate records. You must have experience with cancer biology and immunology and laboratory work in a research group or service laboratory.
You must be highly organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team. Strong communication skills and proficiency in data handling, including use of Excel and relevant software, are essential.
You will demonstrate a proactive and reliable approach, with excellent attention to detail and a willingness to adapt to the demands of a research environment, including flexible working where required.
Experience in techniques such as flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, or molecular biology, along with familiarity with GCP or clinically related research, would be advantageous. It is desirable if you are able to process human tissue, cell culture, and have experience in molecular biology, DNA and RNA extraction, molecular cloning, but it is not essential.
