Our R&D unit in Mengeš is looking for a motivated scientist in the field of Upstream Processing (USP) to join us and help us develop a diverse portfolio of biotherapeutic modalities. As a Senior Scientist you must demonstrate a broad and in-depth knowledge of technologies in recombinant protein production to evaluate the developability of various biologics modalities covered by Novartis Biomedical Research and Development units, ranging from traditional antibodies to advanced biologics formats and mixed modalities, ensuring quality of material delivered and eventually enabling lead candidate selection. Key responsibilities:

• Expand and maintain CHO cells in suspension from small to large scale (up to 200L).
• Use stably transfected CHO cells for the expression of recombinant monoclonal antibodies, multispecific antibodies and other therapeutic proteins with bioreactor systems.
• As USP lead plan, manage and coordinate protein productions across multiple projects; strong alignment required with global project teams to link activities within our organization and facilitate continuous throughput
• Independently generate hypotheses, design and execute follow-up experiments, and troubleshoot issues
• Work collaboratively with lab associates in a matrix setting to expand our protein production toolkit
• Review literature to develop and implement novel technology solutions
• Actively undertake organizational responsibility in lab organization, including maintaining equipment and bringing new equipment in lab
• Document results in detail, present research updates, and participate constructively in project teams and at lab meetings

Minimum Requirements – What you will bring to the role:

• MSc University degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, chemical technology or other relevant discipline with at least 3 year of relevant work experience in industry, or BSc University degree biotechnology, biochemistry, chemical technology or other relevant discipline with at least 6 years of relevant work experience in industry.
• Good theoretical and strong practical laboratory experience in mammalian cell technology (stable cell lines, wave culture systems, stirred tank bioreactors), cell biology and sterile technique
• High learning ability to acquire expertise in new technologies and technical equipment
• Proven experience in successfully prioritizing and keeping timelines
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to run multiple projects in parallel
• Open and proactive communication, strong customer focus, ability to interact with various stakeholders
• Reliable and flexible team player, accustomed to sharing tasks and projects
• Fluency in English (oral/written)

Desirable skills:

• Solid experience in one of the neighboring disciplines (Protein Purification (Downstream Processing) and/or Phys-Chem Analytics)

Expected Annual Base Salary Range for role: €27,160 to € 50,440

The base salary offered is determined based on gender-neutral objectives, such as relevant skills, competencies and experience in accordance with the Novartis pay setting policy and upon joining Novartis will be reviewed periodically.

In addition to your base salary, you may be eligible for a performance-based bonus depending on certain performance parameters.
