Mathematical statistics provides the foundation for the rigorous description, analysis, and interpretation of random and complex data and processes. The field plays a key role in the development of mathematical methods for data science and contributes substantially to addressing contemporary challenges in data analysis. Owing to wide-ranging applications in the natural sciences, engineering, and economics, as well as strong connections to other areas of mathematics, the discipline is of central strategic and interdisciplinary relevance in both research and teaching.
